Driving is a part of most people’s daily routines, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t stressful. Running late, traffic jams, long commutes, bad weather, and many other factors can make you feel stressed behind the wheel. Stress can negatively impact your driving abilities, making you distracted, agitated, and unable to control your emotions on the road. Keep reading below to check out the ideas we put together to help you stay calm and collected behind the wheel.

Easy Ways to Reduce Driving Stress

Keep the air clean: A clean cabin air filter is essential for maintaining good air quality in your car. A dirty cabin air filter can lead to stale air and unpleasant odors. Clean, fresh air can positively impact your mood and health and help you stay stress-free while on the road.

Choose a fresh scent: A calming cabin filter air freshener scent can help create a peaceful and relaxing driving experience. Scents like lavender or new car can be calming and soothing, positively affecting your mood and reducing stress. A new car scent is especially effective in bringing a sense of freshness and calm to your vehicle.

Listen to music or audiobooks: Studies have found that music can help calm the nervous system and stimulate the brain, which can help distract you from stress. Not only that but listening to an upbeat, positive playlist can help to improve your mood and relax your muscles. Not a big music person? Try out an audiobook or podcast. Nearly every book offers an audiobook version, and there are tons of podcasts. Whether you want to listen to interviews with celebrities or learn something new, there are many options to choose from.

Take breaks: Anyone would be cranky after a long time in the car, so it’s no shock that long drives can cause stress. If you’re feeling overwhelmed behind the wheel, consider stopping to take a brief walk to clear your head. It is recommended that you should not drive for more than two hours without taking a break. If you don’t have time for a walk, even pulling over when it’s safe for a few moments can be helpful.

Change the temperature: Temperature plays a big role in comfort when driving. You may become uncomfortable or irritated when it’s too hot or cold, making you focus less on the road. Adjust your vehicle’s cabin temperature before you leave the house, and make sure that it is comfortable so you don’t have to keep changing it while you drive.

Have a snack: Hunger has no place on the road because it can make you more emotional and irritated, negatively impacting your driving experience. Ensure you eat before you leave or have snacks readily available in your vehicle. Next time you’re at the store, pick up a few extra jerky sticks, trail mix, or granola bars to store in your glove box or center console for hunger emergencies.

Plan your route: Driving somewhere new can be anxiety-inducing. If you’re unsure how to get there or where to park when you do, it’s a good idea to take some time before you leave to plan your route and check out the parking situation. GPS tools like Apple or Google Maps can help keep you on the right track and reassure you that you’ll reach your destination.

Take deep breaths: A great way to relax in the car is to take a few deep breaths. Deep breathing is a powerful technique for clearing your mind and relaxing. Take a deep breath and count to five, then hold that and count to ten. Finally, exhale slowly while you count to five. Repeat this technique a few times. Deep breathing can help you create a sense of calm and stay alert behind the wheel.

Creating a calm, soothing environment in your car can help minimize stress and keep you focused on the road. By keeping your cabin air filter clean, adding a cabin air filter freshener, using a calming scent, listening to music, taking breaks, having a snack, planning your route, and deep breathing, you can turn all your drives into enjoyable experiences.
