Temperatures are rising, and summer is here, so it's time to start thinking about how you'll keep your home's air cool, clean, and comfortable throughout the season. The longer days and higher temperatures of summer can put a major strain on your HVAC system and negatively impact your indoor air quality. However, there are several steps you can take to stay comfortable and breathe clean air throughout the summer.

How to Keep Your Home Air Cool This Summer

  • Ceiling Fans Make sure your ceiling fans rotate counterclockwise during the summer. This creates a downdraft, pushing the cool air downward and creating a “wind chill” effect, making your rooms feel cooler and less stuffy without having to lower your thermostat. Run your fan at the highest setting to get the full effect. While the fan won’t actually lower your room temperature, you will feel more comfortable. Using your ceiling fan to stay cool can help you save energy and money by reducing your need for air conditioning.

  • Curtains and Blinds Closing your curtains or blinds on bright, hot summer days can help prevent heat from entering your home. Close the curtains or blinds during peak sunlight hours, especially on windows facing direct sunlight, to prevent heat from building up. Closing your curtains or blinds can also help to lessen the strain on your HVAC system.

  • Sealing Air LeaksCheck around windows, doors, and vents for small cracks and gaps that allow hot air to enter or cool air to escape your home. Seal any leaks using caulk or weatherstripping to make sure that your home stays comfortable and your HVAC system doesn’t have to work any harder.

  • Lighting Traditional, incandescent light bulbs can generate unnecessary heat, making your home feel warmer. To keep your home cooler and more energy-efficient, switch all your light bulbs to LED bulbs. Also, remember to turn off the lights when you're not using them.

  • Appliance Use If possible, try to avoid using heat-producing appliances, such as the dryer, dishwasher, oven, or stove, during the hottest part of the day. Try to use these appliances during early morning or evening hours when temperatures are lower.

How to Keep Your Home Air Clean This Summer

The summer months can negatively impact your indoor air quality, as increased pollen, dust, and humidity can lead to a higher concentration of allergens and irritants circulating throughout your home. PUREFLOW® Home Air Filters are designed to trap 99% of airborne contaminants, including pollen, dust, bad odors, bacteria, and more.

They are designed with four layers of advanced filtration technology to keep your home air as clean and fresh as possible:

  • 1st Stage: High-efficiency layer with a MERV 13 rating, capable of stopping more than 90% of contaminants at sizes as small as 3 microns. Pollen, dust, and other common allergens don’t stand a chance.

  • 2nd and 3rd Stage: Activated charcoal absorbs harmful gases, such as carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide. This layer is combined with baking soda to absorb bad odors.

  • 4th Stage: Advanced antibacterial micro technology reduces biofouling by suppressing the growth of algae, mold, mildew, fungi, and bacteria on the filter.

Keeping your home cool and your air clean this summer doesn’t have to be hard. Taking small steps, such as using ceiling fans, closing your curtains and blinds, sealing air leaks, switching to LED light bulbs, and turning off heat-producing appliances, can make a huge difference in keeping your home comfortable. A PUREFLOW® Home Air Filter ensures your home air is clean and you are protected from irritants. Need help finding your filter? Use our helpful tool
